Monday night for me is ABC -
if I am lucky to have cleaned up after dinner in time I will sit and watch
Australian Stories followed by Four Corners -though lately I admit that I have
been tuning turning on the iPad and tuning in to ABC iView.
A must watch before it
disappears from iView is the report on "India's Daughter".(though I am pretty sure if can be found on youTube it is a BBC documentary).
Two year in the main this is the story of the rape and murder of Jyoti Singh
Pandey, in Delhi. It is a shocking story of a young girl who went to see
a movie with a friend, who was male, and ends up being gang raped and
left to die thrown out of a bus.
Such comment as "....A decent girl won't roam around at 9 o'clock at
night. A girl is far more responsible for a rape than a boy." and “When
being raped, she shouldn’t fight back,” Mukesh says. “She should just be silent
and allow the rape. Then they’d have dropped her off after doing her.”
This documentary was banned
in Indian but it seems that the story and message is out –women in India are fighting
back – they are seeking equity and rallying. It seems like Jyoti’s rape and murder were not in vain - changes in Indian will be slow but at
least there it is moving.
